Sphalerite

Chemical Formula: ZnS

Color: Usually a lighter brown or grey, but tarnishes to a dark brown or black.

Hardness: 3.5-4

Importance: Although the mineral itself has few uses, sphalerite is the main source of zinc. Zinc that comes from sphalerite is used in stainless steel, batteries, plastics, paint, rubber, and fluorescent lights.

Other Interesting Information: Even though it is dark in color, it streak, which is its color when powdered, is actually white.

My Take: I really don’t know why, but sphalerite is my favorite mineral. Too me, it is just cool. That’s all.
