Fluorite

Chemical Formula: CaF2

Color: All colors

Hardness: 4

Importance: The main use of fluorite is to supply the element fluorine. Fluorine that comes from fluorite is found in toothpaste, rocket fuels, and refrigeration fluids.

Other Interesting Information: Fluorite is one of the few fluorescent minerals, which means it glows under ultraviolet light. The term “fluorescent” is actually derived from the mineral fluorite.

My Take: Fluorite, although fairly common, is one of the more interesting minerals. It comes in so many different colors and so many different shapes that no specimen is ever very similar.
